How to Make a DIY Water Spritz for YOUR Hair

A spray bottle can be one of the handiest tools in a natural-hair routine. A light mist can help soften hair before restyling, reactivate curls and make dry sections easier to handle.

But I want to keep this simple and safe. Mixing conditioner, oils and water into a bottle and storing it for weeks is not something I recommend. Once you start making water-based mixtures at home, preservation matters.

The easiest DIY curl mist

For a basic refresh, you only need:

• A clean spray bottle
• Fresh distilled water

Add a small amount of distilled water to a clean bottle, mist the sections that need it, and follow with the moisturizer or styler that already works for your hair. Make a small amount, keep the bottle clean, and do not hang on to a homemade water mixture for weeks.

Should you add conditioner or oil to the bottle?

I would not make a long-storage spray by diluting regular conditioner with water. A product that was formulated and preserved at one concentration is being changed once you add water to it.

Oil also does not truly mix with water on its own. Essential oils need even more care because concentrated fragrance ingredients can irritate the skin or scalp when they are used incorrectly.

If you want a grab-and-go product that contains more than water, use a properly formulated refresher instead of turning your bathroom into a chemistry lab.

When water is enough

A light water mist may be all you need when your style simply needs to be reshaped. Try misting lightly, smoothing or scrunching the curl back into place, and allowing it to dry.

When you need more than water
